Incline Conveyor with Reversing Spiral Curves

Custom incline conveyor for retailerRecently, a customer in the retail and distrubition industry that sells packaged wine, liquor and spirits approached Thomas Conveyor & Equipment with a challenging assignment. The retailer was expanding and had secured an adjacent store front in an existing shopping center. The retailer needed access to the basement of the new area and wanted to use this basement for storage. The inventory consisted of several different sized boxes, with weights up to 50 lbs. per case.

First, Thomas Conveyor conducted a site visit to record critical measurements and produce a CAD layout. Standard incline conveyors would not work due to tight space constraints and several 90º turns to get from one floor down to the basement of the adjacent store location.

Spiral curve conveyor navigates tight areaWorking with the customer's architects and general contractor, Thomas Conveyor designed a complete turnkey conveyor system. The system included:

  • One Reversing Spiral Curve (90º) Belt Conveyor (Jantec Manufacturing) to assist with making a 90º turn while changing elevation to navigate the tight area. Rough-top belt and solid side guards on this conveyor were also specified.
  • Two Roller Bed Inclined Floor-to-Floor Belt Conveyors (Roach Model 796RBF) that provide high load capacity, reversible flow, and nose-over for smooth transition of boxes traveling up or down the conveyor. Rough-top belts to better grip all types of corrugated boxes during the incline/decline and double-rail side guards.
  • One Reversible Belt Driven Live Roller Conveyor (Roach Model 196LRC) to complete the second 90º curve that gives the customer basement access
  • Also included in the system were two sections (top and bottom of the conveyor run) of Galvanized Steel Gravity Roller Conveyor (Roach Model 196G), used for loading and unloading of the boxes as needed.

Thomas Conveyor provided photo eyes (that would power on or off the entire conveyor system when the conveyor was full or empty), a control panel, remote push button stations (so customer could operate the conveyor from many different locations), and warning lights/horns to warn other personnel that the system was about to be activated.

Thomas Conveyor provided drawings of the mechanical and electrical systems and directed the installation, providing a full turn-key solution.
